A Sailing Boat Adventure

Floating around in a sailing boat in the middle of a large lake can be pleasant. With the shore nearby, someone aboard the sailing boat can always get off and head for the nearest shore whenever he feels the need. Aside from the leisurely stroll on the water and the view of the shoreline from the boat, most people do not see sailing in itself as capable of invoking challenge and love. A true sailor enjoys sailing for many reasons, but mostly because of the challenge. It is a challenge to steer the sailboat seemingly against the wind. Going from point A to point B could be academic for someone aboard a motorized craft, but for the sailor on a boat that harnesses the wind, the following the shortest distance between two points could sometimes be an impossible task when the wind is blowing the other way. The skipper aboard a sailing boat now has the challenge of traversing that distance in the shortest amount of time. This is more evident aboard a sailing vessel in the middle of the lake because of the landmarks on the shore.
In the middle of the sea, without landmarks except the skies and the sun, the sailing boat adventure takes on a whole new dimension. Skippers have to learn to read the stars at night and mark the direction using the sunrise and the sunset. Time of day becomes almost irrelevant since the boat seems to be heading nowhere and distances are described by the number of days it will take to get there. Having no other source of nourishment except what is in stock also weighs heavily on the mind. How long before stocks can be replenished could be a question of life and death and ignoring the tiny wisp of a cloud in the horizon could mean losing his one last chance of fresh water. These are things that make the sailor alert and aware of his surroundings. He is never more sure of himself than when he is in his elements.
To the sailor, the smallest details that we all take for granted are factors that affect his living or dying and it is this raw truth that gives him confidence and makes him feel like a real man.
