The city is regarded as the cultural capital of Australia featuring Victorian-era architecture, many museums and beautiful gardens, but what makes Melbourne unique is its weather which can change drastically and so quickly that it is also called ‘the city of four seasons in a day’. Many associate Australia with the arid desertscapes familiar from much Australian iconography: Ayres Rock, outback and endless dusty cattle ranches. Queensland is different: the north-eastern reaches of Australia fall within the tropical zone.
A coastal drive from Cairns to Port Douglas is a good way of experiencing the best of what the region has to offer. From the UK it is possible to fly directly to Brisbane. (…)

Secure in their Norman wisdom, William the Usurper and his fighting men saw the English as insular barbarians. The whole bloody spectacle of Caldbec Hill was sewn up shortly after the event on la tapisserie de la reine Mahilde, or, as we would know it, the Bayeux Tapestry. And this amazing mural is just one draw for visitors here in this accessible region of France.
The French have always treated the tapestry with disdain, probably because it tells a story that it is not really about them. (…)

Whoever said “Life’s a beach” might have been talking about Qatar. The lone, level sands of this Gulf Emirate stretch from one coast to the other with little between but for the occasional decaying mud-built fort.
It’s hot here: the mean temperature between May and September is a toasty 40°. As a consequence there’s not much greenery about, although the name of the capital, Doha, means “big tree” in the local dialect. (…)

Brainy TV legend Carol Vorderman was raised in Prestatyn and when you consider how much this town has to offer it seems a real conundrum that she ever moved away. Plentiful good value accommodation allows the visitor not only easy access to this quintessentially British seaside experience (fondly evoked by the poet Philip Larkin in Sunny Prestatyn) but also places him on the doorstep of some fine scenery and world class long distance hikes (the Clwydian range and Offa’s Dyke respectively). Being the oldest of Alpine pass routes, the Grand-St-Bernard pass is in use at least since the Bronze Age. Armies and travellers have used it for millennia. (…)

If you want to see a lot of newborn sea lion pups, then you need to go to the Galapagos Islands in September.
Since we wanted to use frequent flyer miles for our air, the September timing for our visit was pretty much accidental. It was the only time that the trip schedule fit in with the airline reservations we could get. And we lucked out.
Firstly, though, I have to admit that the Spring is also an excellent time to visit the Galapagos. (…)
